Jim Lewis, Director Information Management & Access, Ministry of the Environment
Maureen Hayvren, Senior Organizational Development Consultant, Ministry of Education
Governments across Canada are recognizing that they need to manage their information resources with the same level of diligence that they apply to their financial and human resources. For a variety of reasons, governments over the past decade have lost a good deal of their capacity to manage their information holdings. Building organizational capacity involves not just skill development for staff, but also implementing the policy and operational "tools" to manage information well. This panel will examine the challenges facing the Ontario government in building IM capacity and will also examine steps taken to build capacity in the Province of Alberta - a leading jurisdiction in IM in Canada.

On June 22, the Good Government Bill received royal proclamation and ushered in changes in both FIPPA and M/FIPPA regarding disclosure of personal information for compassionate reasons. These changes will impact your business so don't miss out.

E7: Advice to a New CIPO
Speaker(s):
Mike Gurski, Privacy Strategist, Bell Security Solutions Inc.
Ontario faces some real privacy challenges in its future. Under those circumstances even if advice is free, it shouldn't be easily dismissed. When the advice is coming from a privacy expert who has insider knowledge from both the public and the private sector, we should all listen hard. In this session two of Ontario's biggest issues: Health Information and Identity Management will be outlined and discussed. One of the keys to success is the ability to move privacy from a policy discussion into a technology discussion. What does Ontario need to be doing more of? What should we be doing less? Come and join the debate on how the course should be set.

Municipalities are always faced with the challenge of providing timely and appropriate information to support Council and Committee discussions and to serve the information needs of the public as well. Part of the solution is a strong IM program, but with the many competing interests for attention and money how does an administrator establish successful programs?
Municipalities are in the business of managing information and there is a need to have government services more integrated at all levels - e.g. shared standards, descriptions, security alignment in a climate of continuing divisional disengagement. Hear how 2 large municipalities are making information management everyone's business as an organizational priority.
