Robert Ellis Smith: Speaker / Author and Publisher of the Privacy Journal to speak at 2011 Conference!

Robert Ellis Smith is a journalist who uses his training as an attorney to report on the individual's right to privacy. Since 1974, he has published Privacy Journal, a monthly newsletter on privacy in a computer age based in Providence, R.I.

Smith is a frequent speaker, writer, and Congressional witness on privacy issues and has compiled a clearinghouse of information on the subject: computer data banks, credit and medical records, the Internet, electronic surveillance, the law of privacy, and physical and psychological privacy.

Smith is the author of Ben Franklin's Web Site: Privacy and Curiosity from Plymouth Rock to the Internet (2004), the first and only published history of privacy in the U.S. He is also the author of Our Vanishing Privacy (1993), The Law of Privacy Explained (1993), Privacy: How to Protect What's Left of It; Workrights, a book describing individual rights in the work place; and The Big Brother Book of Lists. Privacy Journal also publishes Compilation of State and Federal Privacy Laws, Celebrities and Privacy (2006), and War Stories, a collection of anecdotes on privacy invasions.

The New York Times said Smith "sounds the alarm about maintaining freedom and privacy in the computer age" and called him "a principled critic." Privacy Journal is "a privacy watchdog," according to Time magazine.

Welcome

The Provinces of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island, the Nova Scotia Review Office, the Offices of the Information and Privacy Commissioners of PEI and New Brunswick, and the Halifax Regional Municipality are proud to present the 7th Annual Maritime Access & Privacy Workshop. This workshop is a great opportunity to meet, network and share ideas with colleagues from the access and privacy community across the Maritime Provinces. This event will be held on June 2nd and 3rd, 2011 and returns to the elegant Westin Nova Scotian in Halifax, NS.

This event continues to grow since its conception, from creating an A&P community in the Maritime Provinces to identifying challenges and sharing solutions. As our government(s) become more open, new changes will take place; it has never been clearer that the Maritime Access & Privacy community is "Getting It To Work".

Evaluations - You spoke, and we listened!

The conference steering committee takes the evaluations very seriously, and we are happy to announce a few changes to this year's program - changes that were made because of your comments!

  1. Conference date - we are having the event earlier in the month of June - we do not want to compete with other events, or your summer plans.
  2. Case Studies - many of you stated that you would like to see more "how-to" session, as well as theoretical presentations! We will specifically seek out case studies, where presenters can not only tell you what was done, but how.
  3. Facilitators - this year's conference will feature facilitators in each room, ensuring sessions begin and end on schedule.
